The Porch Dweller

I never thought I’d be here,

And yet, here I am.

An outside human, 

The porch dweller of the land.

I sit and I stare, 

And I ponder for hours.

I wonder what life would be like if I had magical powers.

I watch the clouds move,

And form over the sea,

I sometimes wonder, 

If that sea could be me.

I could be an ocean wave,

Or an aquatic eel.

I could be an elegant seagull,

Or an elephant seal.

I could be the piece of a shell, 

Not quite dissolved,

I could be the coral reef, 

Still somehow standing with resolve.

I could be the leaf of a palm, 

Doused in moonlight.

I could be a frog in the grass,

Or a snake, waiting to bite.

I could be any of these things, 

I just never thought I’d be me,

An outside human, 

Dwelling here on the porch by the sea.
